Filmax International, the Spanish production company behind The Machinist (2004), has posted on its official website a teaser poster for Concrete Island; a project that has been mentioned by Brad Anderson earlier this year as something that will bring him, writer Scott Kosar and Oscar winner actor Christian Bale together again.
I’m very skeptic about rumors, but when the production company publish a poster with Bale’s name on it, I better start believing!

Here’s what the poster reads:
Filmax Entertainment presents a Julio Fernández production for Castelao Pictures.
Academy Award Winner Christian Bale
Concrete Island
Directed by Brad Anderson
Screenplay by Scott Kosar
Based on the Best-selling novel by J.G. Ballard
“The talented cast and crew of The Machinist reunited at Concrete Island”
The website also has a short synopsis of the project and here’s a couple of things I found interesting from it:
- The movie will be set in the future 2020 in Los Angeles; the original book is set in the 70s in London. I did not expect it to be a movie set in the past, and choosing the future as timeframe gives me hopes that Kosar is preserving the bizarre essence of the book, the absurdity of the trap and the opposing forces against Robert Maitland (the protagonist) struggle to escape.
- They kept in the summary the “agonising physical pain and the mental turmoil” part; all I can say is OH NOES!!! I just don’t want to see Christian go through another physical transformation
not that I haven’t enjoyed his immersion in his characters, I’m just concerned about his overall health!
I think this is a very interesting project; a movie that I would definitely see even if Christian wasn’t attached to it (but obviously that seeing his name in the poster makes me smile with anticipation
). I also appreciate the loyalty from Christian and all the people involved to get back together and develop another project; it just confirms that The Machinist was a great experience for them over all the issues that they might have faced (the lack of fundings, filming in a different location, Christian physical transformation, etc.)
Let me know what do you think about this project in the comments below, Have you read the book? How do you feel about The Machinist team back together?
